Basic and Clinical Sciences (BCSE) Practice Exam

Foreign-trained veterinarians pursuing certification to practice in North America hit the BCSE as the second of four steps in the ECFVG certification program, run by the AVMA's Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates. A related pathway, PAVE through AAVSB, uses a different exam (the QSE) instead, so confirm which certification track you're actually on before you prep.

What the exam looks like:

That passing score number matters to get right. If you've seen older material citing 425, that figure is outdated, current guidance from the ECFVG puts the bar at 580 on the scaled scoring system. Confirm the current figure directly in the ECFVG Candidate Bulletin before you set a target score for your own prep, since certification exam scoring standards do get revised.

Twenty-five of your 225 questions are unscored pretest items mixed in without being identified, which means there's no shortcut of "spotting" the ones that don't count. Every question needs full effort.

Core content areas span the foundational veterinary sciences: anatomy and physiology (structure and function across animal body systems), microbiology and immunology (infectious agents and immune response), and pathology (disease processes), along with pharmacology and other basic and clinical science domains foundational to veterinary practice.

At 4 hours for 225 questions, you're looking at just over a minute per question on average, workable, but it leaves limited room for getting stuck on any single item. Broad, even review across anatomy, microbiology, pathology, and pharmacology tends to serve candidates better than deep concentration in one area, since the exam draws fairly evenly across foundational veterinary science rather than weighting one domain heavily.
